An initiative to stop the extension of a road that could be a major traffic artery for the city will go before San Luis Obispo city voters.

The initiative’s supporters gathered 3,200 signatures for a ballot measure that could stop the city’s plan to extend Prado Road through a portion of the South Hills open space and alongside the Damon-Garcia sports fields. It’s the only initiative that will be on the city ballot.

Also, the races for mayor and two city council seats are beginning to shape up. SLO city councilmember Jan Marx and former city councilmember Paul Brown have filed candidate papers to run for mayor.

SLO city Councilmember Andrew Carter, former councilmember Kathy Smith, and former planning commissioner Andrea Miller have filed papers indicating their intent to run for city council.

Mayor Dave Romero has announced his retirement from city politics after nearly 16 years on the council, eight of those as mayor. Allen K. Settle will be termed out of his city council seat at the end of this term and is mulling over running for mayor, an office he’s held before.
