Setting aside his misogynistic remarks, I want to thank Gary Wechter (“Thump Trump,” April 6) for encouraging more people to read my opinion piece, “Assigning Blame,” from March 16. Obviously, I am not the only one feeling angst. Just look at Trump’s dismal approval ratings. But it’s not just the Trump situation (a disaster unto itself), it’s also the current far right Republican Party and their supporters, who are attempting to push our country to who knows where, that is also disturbing. Excuse me if I “rant,” but this is scary stuff.
I have some positive suggestions for Gary and others who are willing to listen. First, look up “blind loyalty.” Next, refresh yourself on the concept of a “liberal democracy,” those principles upon which our country was founded. Then, try a little self-reflection on your core beliefs and political positions and accept some of the responsibility for the current division in our country that Al Fonzi is so worried about. If this fails, Google: “Fox News,” “propaganda,” and “brainwashing.”
Once you have some insight, try to base your future actions and votes on those fundamental principles of a liberal democracy, and don’t forget to throw in some basic human decency and common sense when the issues get complex. Then, we can get rid of the extremism and intolerance in our own backyard. Let’s also think outside of our own borders. Then, finally, just maybe, we can get back on our long, but ever so crooked path to greatness. This wouldn’t make Putin, who wants to rid the world of liberal democracies (in case you haven’t noticed), and the other sociopaths out there too happy. These times are gravely serious and we need to open our eyes and respond as such. There is nothing “hysterical” about it. If you don’t believe me, look up “Russia’s Fifth Column” by Ken Gude. That may sober you up!
