NEW TIMES How does the Youth Ride Free program work?
WYATT Youth Ride Free offers free fares for youth ages K-12, from June 1 to Aug. 31, on SLO County transit systems. Youth present their school ID when boarding. Drivers understand that younger children may not have a school ID.
NEW TIMES To which SLO County transit systems does the program apply?
WYATT RTA, South County Area Transit, SLO Transit, Atascadero Transit, and Morro Bay Transit fixed routes.
NEW TIMES What inspired this service to the community?
WYATT Youth Ride Free is a follow-up program to the Summer Break Pass. The pass cost $30, and we were finding that this was inhibiting riders because they had to go to a separate location to purchase the pass, so we decided to initiate this free program. Our goal is to encourage youth to use public transit, through which they will learn new life skills.
NEW TIMES Can parents be assured that the transit system is safe for their children?
WYATT Riding the bus is actually safer than driving in a car, and all our drivers are very well trained. However, there is no minimum rider age, so we recommend parents do a “sample ride” with their children for the first trip, and make sure their children understand how to properly use the system.
NEW TIMES Where are some fun places kids can go this summer, using public transit?
WYATT Routes serve the Premium Outlets, Oceano Dunes, and south county beaches, as well as the Atascadero Zoo.
