Rain caused books to be discarded

Marci Grant’s letter “Books should not be tossed” (March 11) is filled with inaccurate statements. I will address one: “What does it say about our library’s friends that they do this year after year?”

This is my fourth year as chair of the book sale. In the previous three years, we sold all items remaining after the sale to a very generous business man, Sean McLaughlin, from Ventura. In those three years, no books, tapes, CDs, or videos went into a dumpster. This year, on the last day of the sale, there was a rainstorm that started in the south and moved north. When McLaughlin was about to leave Ventura at 11:30 a.m., there was heavy rain. At the same time, the sun was shining in SLO. He decided not to risk his life driving to and from SLO for a load of soggy books. At the end of the sale, there was heavy rain in SLO. He made the correct decision and the volunteers like me tried to do their best in an unexpected situation.
