I beg to differ on the review of Pacific Rim (“Pacific Rim fails to enthrall,” July 18). That movie totally ruled. Considering the way New Times dishes out $10 reviews, I’m surprised to see so much criticism of Pacific Rim. Why such a scrutinizing review on a movie whose sole purpose is entertainment? The movie is an homage to anime. Anime is often silly, and this film is a spot-on tribute to the genre. Even the dialogue was reminiscent of old-school Japanese cartoons.
Sure, it doesn’t deserve an Academy Award—but really, a $5 review? Had Steve and Glen (who are awesome guys) grown up watching Gundam Wing and Power Rangers, I think they would have better appreciated Pacific Rim.
This is, of course, a difference of opinion, but—jeez Louise—you guys seemed quite disappointed with a movie that really knocked my socks off. I’ll be going back to watch all 131 minutes of awesome. Hopefully Bryce Wilson will someday feature it in Blast from the Past and have nicer words about Pacific Rim. I’m no movie aficionado, but Pacific Rim is awesome, and I say have fun and go see it.
