In his first three months on the job, Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar has taken some very positive and promising first steps to restore balance to energy development on our public lands. We need more people like him making decisions to protect the fragile environment, who realize how precious our natural resources are and are willing to stand up to those interested only in profit, such as the oil companies. Predictably, Salazar is being criticized by the oil industry for putting the brakes on runaway energy development on public lands.
Secretary Salazar deserves praise for the first steps he has taken to restore balance to the Bureau of Land Management’s oil and gas program. This administration recognizes that our public lands belong to everyone, not just the energy industry, and that they harbor a host of environmental, recreational, and cultural values that need to be protected.
Let’s all support Secretary Salazar in his efforts to protect our public lands, the environment, and encourage him to keep up the great work.
