Some people jokingly call the sludge floating in the ocean "brown chunky applesauce." The city of Pismo calls it pigeon deprecation from under the pier, but surfer Jennifer Jozwiak disagrees with that.

# "It's a lot of brown stringy stuff that does not look like pigeon poop," said Jozwiak, vice president of the local Surfrider chapter and member of Central Coast Surf Sisters. "They can put up signs telling us it's dirty, but they're still not cleaning it up."
Jozwiak became involved in the Surfrider Foundation after getting sick every time she went in the water two summers ago. Now, as a member of the Water Quality Task Force, she has asked her fellow Surf Sisters to help fundraise for solutions to water problems like high bacteria levels.
Surf Sister Lisa Shrubb was instrumental in organizing the April 18 fundraiser Chick Flick Movie Night that will be held at The Shack. Attendees can watch the surf movies Shimmer and Girls Rip and possibly others. Videos, clothing, shoes, gift baskets, and surf art prints will be raffled to raise $500 for the Surfrider Foundation San Luis Bay Chapter. That money will then be put toward applying for a $500,000 grant for DNA testing of local water to find out if the pollution is human or non-human.
Another purpose of the movie night is to get women surfers together, which was one of the original purposes of the club when it started about a year ago. Now the club roster is comprised of about 25 women in their 20s, 30s, and 40s. They've done a few surf and camping trips and now hope to see even more people show up for the fundraiser.
The Shack is located at 763 Foothill Blvd. in San Luis Obispo. Call Lisa Shrubb at 748-0833 for more info about the fundraiser.
