When I first read the compendium of illiterate claptrap New Times was passing off as the “winners” of 55 Fiction (July 4), I thought, aha, these clever folks are pulling a spoof to see if their readership is awake. Alas, I was in error. This unintelligible collection of mindless drivel actually were the winners. Unbelievable.
I can think of only two reasons why New Times would purposely publish such garbage. One: These were the best of the stories submitted, and therein lies a sad commentary on the lack of writing skills among your contributors. Or, two: Your judges are grossly incapable of distinguishing good writing from bad. If this is the case, I strongly recommend they read the two 55 Fiction books published by Steve Moss several years ago, which abound with superlative micro-stories.
