The court granted equality

True to form, Otis Page indulges his two favorite obsessions—sex and homosexuals (“Citizens should work to protect marriage, June 5). He says that the recent California Supreme Court action overturning Proposition 22 is discrimination against religious people. †What a laugh that is! What has the most heinous history of discrimination, human misery, outright repression, and even mass homicide, if not organized religion?

The California Supreme Court didn’t discriminate against anyone. It lifted the bigoted discrimination voted in by an intolerant electorate against a sizeable segment of our population in order to allow that segment to have the same rights and privileges that the majority enjoys. That is the function of the judiciary: to protect the minority from the tyranny of the majority. What is puzzling, though, is just why Otis is so obsessed with homosexuality.
