The spirit versus the letter

Regarding the letter “Opponents of gay marriage defy logic” (April 16), separation of church and state law was put into place to protect self-supporting churches and public donations to prevent them from being unfairly taxed. Later expanded to protect charitable contributions to nonprofit organizations, today it’s being bent toward an atheist movement to interpret it as the people’s right to deny “Intelligent Design” in public classrooms under the guise of “covert evangelism.” The First Amendment, which stipulates, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof,” is being bent as a ploy to deny the practice or display of any and all religious principles on public property so as not to offend anyone.

Other press articles testify to how ignorant we’ve all been kept in both the secular and parochial academia, to the fact that the Bible is in virtually every aspect of American law. Read the Book of Deuteronomy and the Proverbs before spouting pens and tongues professing your differences of opinion on whether the Bible should have no standing in the ethics that shaped our culture or citing it has no basis in how our government was founded. You’ll discover the origin of many of our civil codes and legislation, which has been quite dynamic in the formation of our civil and criminal justice system to this very day.  You’ll also be reminded why everything always fails under the control of man and what not to do so this doesn’t keep happening.
