Wow! Interesting article (“Messy introspection,” April 25). As a parent to a Cal Poly freshman who has a meal plan, there have been plenty of complaints. Students even signed a petition for improvement of the food in the dining halls. Perhaps students didn’t complain directly to Ragsdale, but the quality of the food is a complaint, the healthiness of the food and choices is a big complaint, and the variety is also something my son complains about. I expected Food Service at Cal Poly to be excellent—what a wonderful area, lots of fresh products close by, but it’s a lot of unhealthy, fried, fatty foods. I have a son who is 18 and eats like a typical teenage boy—but he can’t wait to get away from the food. He says everyone in the dorms has gotten sick at least once and blames it on the food, and they do their best to eat anyplace other than VG’s.
The only saving meal is the one that goes until 2 a.m.—they do like the access to food late at night and I guess the food then is ok.
Hoping that things change for future students—my nephew will start in the fall and is already afraid of the food.
