We all must play an active role in preventing abuse

SLO County Child Abuse Prevention Council executive director

Now that Jerry Sandusky has been found guilty of child sexual abuse, the question before us as a nation is: What have we learned?

We have learned that as a country the impact of child sexual abuse remains more far-reaching than most of us were able to acknowledge before the Sandusky scandal happened. In San Luis Obispo County, we are prepared to come together to support healthy childhoods and prevent child sexual abuse before it ever occurs. Also, we know that all adults must play an active role in the lives of all children who live in our communities if we are to ensure that all forms of child abuse are prevented and that when child abuse occurs, we must address it and help children to heal.

At the SLO County Child Abuse Prevention Council, we are committed to providing child abuse and neglect prevention resources in all regions of San Luis Obispo County. Each year we educate more than 2,500 school-age children with “Talking About Touching,” an evidence-based, child personal safety curriculum.

As a nonprofit organization, SLO-CAP’s mission is to provide this service free to the community, and we depend on donations and sponsorships to support this valued educational outreach.
