Wanna pat Guy Rathbun on the back? Step in line.
The 40-year radio veteran and former program manager of National Public Radio local affiliate KCBX received recognition and praise for his lengthy career on June 5 at the San Luis Obispo County Board of Supervisors Chambers.
“He is very respectful and very well-informed,” Supervisor Frank Mecham said of Rathbun, the man behind such programs as Club McKenzie and a slew of others he hopes to soon broadcast from his home studio in Santa Margarita through his new endeavor, Public Radio Exchange.
Rathbun served as the KCBX program manager from 1975 until 2011, when he switched from a staffer there to a new position of freelancing radio programming to the station. During his career, he interviewed many prominent figures, even developing a buddy relationship over doughnuts and coffee with then assemblyman, now U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta.
Rathbun said he has no plans to retire anytime soon, and he hopes current radio will move away from the “blowhards who keep ranting and raving and making false statements.”
The SLO City Council is next in line to praise Rathbun’s long career, and a public gathering is scheduled for June 15, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the SLO County Library community room in downtown SLO.
