I was shocked to see the second and third place awards for the "Best Place to Listen to Live Music" (Best of SLO, April 28-May 5). Concerts in the Plaza is an excellent choice for first place. However, for Mother's Tavern to take second is a travesty. Here's why:
Around October of 2004, Mother's Tavern actually sent a letter to future scheduled acts and bands that drew nice crowds, like the JD Project, Resination, and JND. It stated that due to some technical difficulties with their stage, they would no longer be featuring live music during the evenings and all future gigs were thereby cancelled.
So by not supporting any sort of music scene, they should not be allowed to take second place in this category. That's like voting for a grocery store as the best local restaurant.
To their credit, Paul Brown's own swing band still plays on Sunday afternoons, but one guy standing onstage every night playing CDs simply does not count as "Live Music."
I sure as hell don't live in SLO County strictly for the music scene. I live here because it's a beautiful area populated with good people. So it pains me to see people confusing a bad DJ with live music. And remember, people, there are businesses that do support live music, like the Frog and Peach and The Dwelling.
