Fifty of the Central Coast's finest contest surfers of all time--and three wildcards from the local Triple Crown of Surfing--will battle it out on the beach at the second annual Central Coast Invitational on Feb. 24 at 8 a.m. The event is scheduled to be held at 24th St. in Cayucos, but is subject to move depending on where the waves are breaking best.
While there's a $500 purse, contest organizer Nate Ditmore said the experience alone is more valuable than any dollar amount.
"It's not about the sponsors, it's not about anything but competing with your fellow surfer," he said. "It's really for bragging rights to be called the best surfer on the Central Coast for the entire year."
Ditmore, co-owner of the Morro Bay and San Luis Obispo Surf Companies, said he and his friends designed this event to help build camaraderie between the old and new guards.
"We've got young kids like Killian Garland and Nate Tyler to seasoned veterans like Van Curaza and Dave Parmenter competing against each other," he said. "It's just really a core surfing vibe."
An awards ceremony, with live music and a video of the contest, will be held at Downtown Brewing Co. in San Luis Obispo at 7 p.m.

We don't know if it's related, but New Times staffers have also spotted eight-time world champion Kelly Slater around town in recent days.
